Check Your Tools
Even before the ground starts to thaw you can make sure that all your equipment is in working order and ready to go. This means going through the list of all your gardening tools and checking for damage and replacing anything that cannot be repaired. Check to make sure that your hoses did not tear from freezing over the winter by running water through them. Change the oil in your lawnmower and make sure to clean grass from the blades as well as check the blades to see if they need to be replaced.
Clear Your Yard
Another thing you can check off your list before the winter is even over is to clear your yard of any sticks or branches that fell down during the winter. Remove any obstacles from your mower early to help facilitate an easier transition into the spring. You can also use your rake to get rid of all the dead grass.
Fix the Bare Spots
Once the ground has thawed you can fill all the bare patches with seed or sod. Make sure to water well so that these patches don’t become homes for weeds later in the spring. The better you prepare your yard the fewer weeds you will have to deal with. But some weeds are inevitable. Early spring is a good time to weed your garden or lawn for the first time and discourage future weeds.
Don’t Rush to Fertilize
Fertilizing your lawn too early in the season can promote overgrowing. This will mean more mowing early in the spring and more weeds. The best time to fertilize your lawn is after the fourth mowing, to avoid these problems. Always make sure to not over-fertilize your lawn and to pick a product that is best suited for your region and your type of grass.
