Preparing Your Lawn and Garden for Fall Weather

As the days get shorter and the pumpkin spice lattes get taller, your lawn and garden start whispering, “Hey, don’t forget about us!” Fall isn’t just about raking leaves while humming to yourself and pretending you don’t see the neighbor’s pile blowing into your yard. It’s about giving your outdoor space the right kind of attention so it survives the cooler months and looks great come spring.

Rake Like You Mean It

Raking is not a one-and-done event, even though we might wish that were the case. Those leaves will keep falling (and falling… and falling), and different trees shed their leaves at different times. So, plan to rake at least once a week.

Use light, steady strokes instead of trying to wrestle the entire yard into submission in one afternoon. Not only will your grass breathe easier, but your lower back will thank you, too.

Mow Based on Temperature

Don’t put the mower away just because you’d rather kick your feet up on the couch with a warm cup of apple cider. Grass is still growing until the temperature consistently dips below about 50 degrees.

Mow every 10–14 days, keeping the blades a little higher than you would in summer. This helps protect the roots and keeps your yard looking tidy, even as it heads into winter dormancy.

Don’t Forget to Prep Your Irrigation System

With all the things to do to prepare your home for winter, it can be easy to overlook your irrigation system. And simply shutting it off might not be enough. Run one last check to make sure everything’s working, then shut it down before the first freeze sneaks up on you.

Drain the lines (this is a super important step) and, if you’re in a region where winters hit hard, have a professional blow out the system. It may not be glamorous, but it’s a lot better than dealing with cracked pipes.

Don’t Forget the Garden Beds

Your flower and veggie beds could use a little TLC, too. And, it’s a lot easier to take care of things before the snow falls than it is to play clean up in the spring. Remove dead plants, add a layer of mulch, and maybe toss in some fall bulbs if you want an early burst of color in the spring. Think of it as tucking your garden in for a long nap.
